Speech delivered by His Excellency Ambassador Selçuk Ünal at the event "Stratcom Public Forum: A Fairer World is Possible"
Excellencies, Esteemed members of the Embassies
Members of the Turkish Communications Authority of the Presidency,
Distinguished members of the Turkish-Dutch Community,
Dear Guests,
I would like to welcome you to the STRATCOM Public Forum titled “A Fairer World is Possible”.
This event, organized by the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of Türkiye, has chosen a very topical theme which reflect the current sentiments about the effectiveness of the current international order. I believe that discussions today will provide valuable insights into how we can collectively address common challenges pertaining to the effectiveness of the international order.
The theme “A Fairer World is Possible”, resonates with Türkiye’s commitment to global peace and security. For that international cooperation is key.
As President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been emphasizing, today’s international system faces significant challenges in delivering justice to all nations. Institutions designed to uphold global peace and stability have, unfortunately, become ineffective in handling crises and resolving armed conflicts. This reality necessitates urgent reform in international governance to ensure inclusivity, fairness, and transparency in global decision-making processes.
The ongoing global crises, armed conflicts, illegal migration, climate change, rising Islamophobia, demonstrate the urgent need for a more effective and inclusive international order. Türkiye, with its deep-rooted diplomatic traditions and humanitarian approach, has always been a strong advocate for international solidarity and dialogue. We believe that the world cannot be left at the mercy of a few powers. We believe global governance should reflect voices of all states.
The phrase “The world is bigger that Five” which President Erdoğan uses to voice our call for reform in the United Nations describes the need to a fairer world. And as our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasises, last being in the Munich Security Forum, international system faces significant challenges to deliver peace.
Türkiye, with its deep-rooted diplomatic tradition and experience is advocating a more just world.
And we are voicing this call with our Dutch colleagues together. As you know, two countries never fought with each other or have never been in opposing sides in their history. This arises from the deep-rooted mutual understanding of the importance of friendship, cooperation and alliance. We share the same determination also today as active members of all Euro-Atlantic security architecture, European institutions and the UN system. As the co-founders of the Council of Europe, strong NATO Allies and powerful supporters of multilateralism, we are bound together in this shared global outlook.
“A fairer world” means to prioritise fairness and justice based on multilateralism. We believe that regional ownership is key when we are searching political solutions to conflicts. Palestine in particular Gaza, Syria, Ukraine, issues of Africa are all cases in point. Türkiye is trying its best to contribute to settlement of all disputes in the world. In that respect, I kindly suggest all to have a look at the report published by the Munich Security Forum.
On that note I wish a fruitful forum. We also kindly invite all to stay to watch the documentary “Devrim” – the story of the famous Turkish painter Devrim Erbil.
Thank you for your participation.
